Using the conversion wizard
Using the conversion wizard
Section titled “Using the conversion wizard”The wizard is the simplest way to convert a single document in Gevell PDF. You add a file, watch it convert, and download the results from one screen. For batches, folders, or ongoing work, use the dashboard instead.
Open the wizard at pdf.gevell.com/wizard. You need to be signed in; if you are not, you are sent to the sign-in page first and brought back afterwards.
1. Add your document
Section titled “1. Add your document”The first screen is titled Convert a document to accessible HTML. Add your file in one of these ways:
- Drag a file onto the upload area, or choose it with the browse link.
- Paste a link to a document or web page.
You can upload a PDF, a Word document, or an image. File types and size limits are listed in Uploading files.
Conversion starts automatically once the upload finishes.
2. Follow the progress
Section titled “2. Follow the progress”While your document converts, the screen shows:
- A status message describing the current phase.
- A progress bar with a percentage.
- A live preview where converted pages appear as they finish, so you can start reading before the whole document is done.
You can safely close the page while a conversion runs. It keeps working in the background, and the file is waiting for you under View my previous files when you return.
If the document can’t be converted
Section titled “If the document can’t be converted”Some files are stopped before conversion starts, and the screen tells you why and what to do. The most common reasons are:
- The PDF is password-protected. Remove the password in a PDF editor and upload it again.
- The PDF has no readable text (a scanned document). Run it through OCR software first, then upload the result.
- The PDF can’t be read. The file may be damaged. Re-export it from the original application.
- The PDF contains embedded audio or video. Those need captions and transcripts, which can’t be generated automatically.
More fixes are in Troubleshooting.
If your balance is too low
Section titled “If your balance is too low”If your balance can’t cover the document, a Not enough balance dialog shows the amount required, the amount available, and the shortage. Choose See plans & pricing to add funds (see Controlling costs), or Cancel & delete file to remove the upload.
3. Download your results
Section titled “3. Download your results”When the conversion finishes, the screen reads Conversion complete and lists what you can download. Each item has its own download button:
- Accessible HTML — the WCAG-compliant HTML document.
- Accessible PDF — a tagged PDF made from the converted document. It is generated the first time you ask for it, so the button may read Generating… for a short while before it changes to Download PDF.
- Markdown — clean Markdown for documents, wikis, and editors.
- Conformance Report — a VPAT 2.5 Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR).
- Accessible flipbook (ZIP) — a self-hostable web version you can unzip onto any web server.
If the document contains form fields, the wizard also offers an Accessible Form with real input fields, included at no additional cost.
To convert another document, choose Start over.
To check the result before you download it, see Previewing results.
Finding earlier files
Section titled “Finding earlier files”On the first screen, choose View my previous files to open My Files. From there you can convert a file that was uploaded but not converted, track one that is still processing, or view a finished one. Choose Hide my files to close the list.
