Getting started with TheAccessibleOrgChart
TheAccessibleOrgChart turns a CSV or an image into a structured, keyboard-navigable org chart that meets WCAG 2.1 AA, with a hosted URL you can share or embed. Hosting and unlimited edits are $30/year per chart.
1. Import your data
Start in the wizard at orgchart.theaccessible.org:
- Upload an image or PDF (PNG/JPG/GIF/PDF, up to 10 MB) — the chart is extracted automatically.
- Upload a spreadsheet (CSV/XLSX/ODS) — you confirm which columns map to which fields.
A CSV works best with a Name and Manager column; Title, Department, Email, Phone, Location, Employee ID, Photo URL, and Secondary Managers are optional. Multiple secondary managers are separated with a semicolon (;). A ready-made template is linked in the wizard.
2. Edit people and hierarchy
In the editor, add, edit, or delete people in a tree-table. Each person has contact fields, an optional photo upload, a manager link, and typed secondary relationships (dotted-line, peer, mentor, report, or a custom type). Changes auto-save; you can also bulk-import a CSV to update many people at once.
3. Review and rearrange
On the preview, choose from 12 accessible templates (top-down tree, radial, cards, list, and more), and set a color scheme, density, and dark mode. On the top-down tree, radial, and civic templates you can drag a person onto a new manager to reparent them — the app blocks drops that would create a loop. The WCAG report shows the AA status for the chosen template.
4. Brand it
On branding, pick a seed color — the app automatically corrects it to guaranteed WCAG 2.1 AA contrast and shows a live preview before you save. Choose a font, and assign line styles (solid/dashed/dotted) to each relationship type. The seed color is the single source of truth and is applied on every render.
5. Share or embed
Create a share link from the editor or preview. Optionally add a password and an expiration date. Share the …/share?token=… URL or grab the embed snippet for your website. Downloaded HTML and embeds keep working independently of the hosted copy.
6. Publish for the year
From the dashboard, click Finalize — $30 to host the chart for a year (renew when it expires). The hosted URL stays live for the paid period; any HTML you downloaded or embedded elsewhere stays live regardless.
